Footwear is the most important piece of hiking gear: a blister in the first kilometer can ruin the whole day. Here is what to look for.
Boot or low shoe?
For rocky trails, steep climbs and a heavy pack, a high boot supports the ankle. For clean trails and light walks, a low trail shoe is less tiring.
Leather or synthetic?
Leather lasts for years and shapes to your foot, but it needs care. Synthetics are lighter and dry fast. If you also hike in winter, look for a waterproof membrane.
Three rules for the size
- Try them on in the afternoon, when your feet are more swollen.
- Wear the socks you will wear on the mountain.
- Downhill, your toes must not touch the front: leave a finger of space.
One last thing: break in new boots on short walks before the long route.
